Just yesterday, i made some comments about myself. and today, the whole day, whole sec 3 express classes went for this "super-teen" course that talks about being successful in life, self esteem and how to study for exam. and out of this 3, i think the talk about self esteem benifitted me the most. (:
"Life's not fair. If you think life is fair, you are crazy. So, life's not fair. But so what? Life's not fair, so you have to make your life fair for yourself." This is what the speaker, Mr Peter Lau said. and it really inspired me. He meant either you accept your life, or you change your life. For things unchangeable, accept it. For things that can be changed, change it for the better.
He went on telling us about this guy having pimples. This guy's mother sent this guy to super-teen camp. but warned the speakers not to say about her son's bad pimples. however, when mr peter saw this guy, he forgot whatthe mother said because this student's pimples was so bad. so he went on saying "WA! your face pimple plantation ar?!" and the whole class laughed. and of course, the guy was mad and wanted to challenge peter, but, he controlled himself. for the next 3 days of the camp, campers teased him about the "pimple plantation". Finally on the third day, in the middle of the class, he broke down suddenly. he shouted "SO WHAT?! HAVE PIMPLE SO WHAT?!" I can really imagine the anger and disapointment he had in himself. Mr Ernest came and said "Yeah, have pimple so what?" and he added on "Class, can u accept him for having pimples?" and the class said "yes". Mr Ernest said "The whole class accepts u. The only one who dun accept u, is urself".
This story really really inspired me. bad skills in tuba, so what? bad skills in tuba, so i have to practice more. juniors might be better than me, so what? juniors might be better than me, so i have to practice more. other people seems to learn faster and easier than me, so what? so i hve to practice even harder or practice another way im practicing now, but since i cant find another way, i'll just practice harder.
Super-teen called the campers back in another 6 month's time. and this guy, his face was a whole lot better now. and mr peter went to him and say "Wa, your face better ar!" and this guy, again, says with his anger "BECAUSE OF YOU ALL LA! SAY WHAT PIMPLE PLANTATION, WHAT ACCEPT MYSELF" something like that.
Mr Peter and Mr Ernest also says that Self esteem is being lovable and have capability. Lovable, not people loving or liking you, but are you able to love? and the first person you have to love is yourself. they carried explaining what's love. in simple form, love is the accept the person. you have to accept yourself for who u are! ur looks, ur weakness, ur strengths, etc. and capability, u have to be confident. well, i think both factors are very closely linked together. so if u have one, u probably have the other.
Another thing i learnt from this course is to set goals and believe i can achieve it. this definitely requires a higher value of self esteem as u can see "Believe i can achive it" up there. now, to list my goals in order:
- To improve my tuba tone and rhythm (well, tone first, definitely) before SYF'11
- To be a good senior after SYF, both playing abilities and attitude
- To score 8 A1s for O levels (Mr Ernest kept stressing this LOL)
- Practice, Practice, Practice for audition for NAFA access course and NAFA
- Earn or save up $$$ to buy a tuba and enter NAFA access course
- Study well in NAFA
- Learn either composing or conducting in NAFA or other music schools
- Work in the music industry and be outstanding
- Be Singapore's top tuba player
- Be the world's top tuba player (I dunno if im day dreaming, but since it's in my "Goal list" I'll continue day dreaming xD)
- Help Singapore get it's music standard up
- Spread the awareness of music to the world (or at least Singapore)
Since i talked about day dreaming, Mr Peter also said Mr Ernest once told him to beware of people who day dream. Because one day, their dreams might come true.
Yes, I'll work hard for both my tuba skills and studies now. And i'll achieve those goals one by one.
