I was talking to Nicholas about NAFA (when I was supposed to be doing my homework XD). Den I really was shaken if I really wants to go NAFA. I mean, yea, Nicholas is encouraging me to go. But well, look at Singapore. Does musicians get a good pay? Does musicians pay more on their educational fees than what they earn?
However, if I give up my musician dream, I really don't know what job I would pursue. Surely, every job has a risk. What if I can't make it being a musician? What will I pursue then? I don't know...
In addition, to get in NAFA, you'd have to pay a yearly school fee of around $5000. and you will have to buy your own instrument. Tuba costs around $8000 for a better ones, but not the best yet. I would prefer YBB 641, the current one I'm using in hua yi, coz i got used to it already. it cost about $7900 now? the price would soon go up to $8000. And there's access course which gives you a higher chance to get into NAFA. which costs about $2000. All these adds up to $15000. I'm not financially prepared.
Ok, Nicholas says that NAFA would lend you the instrument first. So my tuba can wait. $8000 gone temporary. left with... $7000. Ok, I could save up $7000 by the end of sec 4 hopefully. Now I'm financially prepared. But now, my playing skills. I really doubt my playing skills. Even if I have the money to get in NAFA, they still would judge on my playing skills. I know! PRACTICE! that's not a problem. the problem is, we are getting lessons!!! I don't even have a proper warm up now! how can I improve my tone?! And with all the homeworks flooding in, even if I bring my tuba home to practice, I wouldn't have time to practice!
Ok, let's just say everything goes well, I get into NAFA. What am I going to do after I got my bachelor degree from NAFA? Go overseas to get a Master's or Doctorate degree? This, too, requires money. and this time, it costs more. Plus, I wouldn't want to go overseas. My friends and family is here in Singapore! I couldn't bring my family overseas with me, because my sister will still be studying in singapore! she have to finish her education! I can't imagine the boredom and loneliness when I go overseas to study or even work.
Nicholas also suggested joining the SSO as a tuba player, he says it's a career. But an orchestra only needs 1 tuba player. And how many tuba players out there would want to join the SSO? They would of course go through auditions and trials, blah blah blah, and choose the best. It's not that easy.
And I told myself I want to earn much. I want to provide my children with the best. I want to buy them anderson's ice-cream without feeling the pain of losing money. I want to treat my family with restaurant food without feeling to pain of losing money. I dream of living in a condo or terrace house with my wife and kids. And all my kids would play different instruments. So I would have to have the amout of money to buy it, and for maintenance. All of these requires money. Can musicians earn that much in Singapore?
With triple science course, and A maths, i can easily get in to any JC or Poly course and earn a lot when I goes to work. But music is my passion.
Now, I would have to choose between passion, or money.
